  2. I was satisfied with my final project. I usually prefer final projects over final exams. This project allowed me to look deeper into a film that I enjoyed the most in this class. Presenting my project has allowed me to interact with you, allowing me to explain my project well before it is analysed. Commenting on others' projects allows the presenter to understand how his/her audience is understanding his/her presentation. I believe that this is very helpful because it's important to know what your presentation is making others feel and think. I really enjoyed the final project, and I thought it was a good idea!

  3. In general, I was satisfied with my final project. I did a lot of work and research on it. But there are also some points I failed to show in the project. Since I did not have a plenty time on my final project, I did not get the whole ideas in my mind. So I think next time I could work better. I got fresh ideas with other classmates’ projects. Some of them did pretty good job in discussing different directors ‘ styles by the method of video. It is pretty impressive for me. Also the advices given from classmates also filled my blank. For further project or paper, I will work more on fresh ideas and prepared a lot before I start.

  4. I felt that our final project went really well. I was able to work with Clara and she pushed me to think about a lot of different aspects I may not have considered if I had done the project on my own. I am very satisfied with the project and the presentation I felt went well! The process for my own project was good and commentating wasn't too hard, but made us read other's projects. However, I did feel a little uneasy as what to expect and what exactly was expected of us to do as commentators. I felt also that the whole atmosphere the past two days was really rushed and stressful.

  5. I was personally satisfied with my project, since there was a lot of time investment involved, especially with the video. In retrospect, I could have probably better distributed my time between the video and the critical essay component, and tied the two more closely together. In that regard, it may not be as successful as I'd have liked. Presenting the project and commenting on others project allowed me to reflect on what is expected in such presentations, and what I could have done better to prepare for it.

  6. I was satisfied with my final project, because I watched many times of the movies that I chose for the final project. I also very seriously find some unknown details about these movies on the Internet. When I heard people said they like my project, I was very happy, because I got satisfaction. I also like the other students' work, I think they prepared these works a lot. In this process, I enjoy the process of creation and published, I think these can improve our ability of study.

  7. In my opinion, I was satified with my final project. Because of I have been use many of time to research it. In my final eassy, I use some academic word to explain my own ideas, and give some example to demonstrate my remark. Said to my presentation I think it is also well, because I brief expound my viewpoint in 3 minutes. On the other hand through commentating on others' projects, I think I have some places need to improve about academic writing, Such as if I use the powerpoint and other electronic software will have better result when I present my academic writing. All in all, I have a great harvest in this semester, it teach me how to write the film response and analyze film professionally, it improve my skill of writing, and I also found some problems of my own regarding the academic writing at the same time, in my opinion all of this will be helpful for my future learning.

  8. I thought that this was a fun and interesting experience because I had the opportunity to analyze a movie of my choice and share my interpretation and thoughts with the class. Many classes’ mid-terms or final projects are generally just exams and paper, so it’s a good change of pace to have the freedom to choose the format of the project. I chose to make a short movie because I always liked filming and making funny videos, and I chose to make this movie similar to a reality show/ documentary style because I wanted to be original, but I must admit I have mixed feelings about the outcome. I believe that I set the topic for the project way too early, and subsequently limiting my options for better ideas. I knew I wanted to do something with the immigration idea as soon as I finished watching Beijing Bicycle, and I just had my mind set to that idea ever since. But I realized that after watching other people’s presentation, there are many ideas or topics that I could’ve done, as many people also used topics similar to mine.

As far as researching goes, I did not allow myself enough time to find good academic sources, so that probably lowered the quality of my paper too, which is what I wanted to use to share my ideas of struggles of being an immigrant, along with the short film. It was fairly difficult to make a short film about country vs. city with being too similar to the movies we have watched, so Raymond and I did our best to illustrate our ideas, while being original. I had a fun time filming the movie and editing it (although it was time consuming), but I had a difficulty writing the paper because it is hard to collaborate with someone on a paper, as I’ve only done it maybe once or twice before. Overall, I had a good time doing this project because of the freedom we were given, which allowed me to express my thoughts and ideas the way I want to.

  9. In a word, I was satisfied with my final project. I analysis the details of the roles I watched in the film and learn something more than just the film itself. The interesting point of watching a film is changing for me, as looking for the details of the films and learning the purpose and meaning behind the screens, rather than just having fun from watching film. But if I have more time to prepare my final project adequately, like fully and roundly research and deeply analysis the leading roles in the films, I can do better than what I have now. From studying this course and doing this final project, watching films has more meanings to understand the ploys used by directors and to learn the background of every film.

  10. I would have to say that I was satisfied with my final project. Instead of one large cumulative test at the end of the semester, I found it enjoyable to dive into one of the films we watched even further than before. As far as success goes, I believe that my project was successful. My favorite film of the semester, and focus of my project, was Eat Drink Man Woman, so it was fascinating to go in and look at it from a deeper perspective (I probably watched the opening scene at least 10 times). I also thought that it was helpful to present it. Writing and presenting what you write are two completely different things. When writing, you have pages and pages to explain yourself, while when giving a presentation you only have a few short minutes in which to condense all of your material; therefore you can really summarize, and get the opportunity to share with everyone. Commentating also helps because it gives you a benchmark to compare yourself against. Once again, overall I thought the project was a great idea, and enjoyed working on it!

  11. I would like to say that I was satisfied with my final project. I did some analysis on “Beijing Bicycle” and “Blind Shaft” in my paper. These two are my favorite movies in class and also “The Killer” and “Let the Bullets Fly”. I felt like my presentation brought information to all class about the background of migrant worker in China. But next time, I think I need do some deeper research on the topic rather than just talk about some charts and graphs. In this class, I’m not just watched movies but also learnt some background and history behind movies. I really love this kind of “paperless final” rather than the regular final exam. It is more creative and has much more fun!

  12. I think my final topic is sensitive but great, it might cause some people to feel disrespectful to talk about our own country like that, but I think we should face all these problems we have in the society, or we can never get better.
and I think my presentation went well today, it was not good that I forgot to bring my ppt with me to class, however, I think that I have made my point.

  13. My final paper is good I think, at least better than mid-term paper. I talk about the Blind Mountain and blind shaft. Both of these two films reflect the real things happened in China in some rote areas and darkness and hidden rules. It is kind of Hong xiaoxu’s paper main about. I studied a lot from his paper. And my presentation is successful too. I combine this two films and content with director-LI YANG’s life experience.

  14. I think that my final project was very revealing for me. It encouraged me to put myself in the Director's shoes in a way that just writing would not have. I had to think about budget, editing, acting performances, angles, and a whole host of other details that are very important in filming, and telling in how a film is finally put together, that I was able to pick out distinctive elements to analyze. Also, I realized the difficulty of putting a film together when creating my own, and finally decided that the reason John Woo's methods produce films that are 'safer' has to do with how much money must be spent in creating them, while Hou Hsiao-Hsien's films are much more planned out from the start, and more along the lines of a novel written with classical intent in mind.

  15. Like anyone else, I hate to admit a job poorly done, but that describes how I feel about my final presentation. I procrastinated too long and didn't get involved enough in all the movies we watched. I found myself really drawn into nearly every movie we watched this semester (sorry John Woo!*), yet when it came time to write I inexorably fell into the trap of examining movies that I could more easily relate to my own time and had a more recent memory of (those two movies being Blind Shaft and Beijing Bicycle---which don't get me wrong were tremendous movies). Much of the blame, however, is on my shoulders. My PPT presentation lacked enough video and pictorial elements, and let's be honest: PowerPoints are not the most engaging media for presentations on films.

Notably, my greatest regret in this class has been my inability to absorb the information about film analysis outside of the plot and outside of the context of Chinese film. I'm proud to be heading towards a Christmas break full of 'film screenings' with my family and friends, knowing that I have a keener eye and more analytical mind, yet I feel I've fallen short of my expectations.

If I could do it over again, I'd have more scene analysis and incorporate more cinematic elements and academic sources in my paper. I also failed to hone my arguments enough to suit such a short research paper, and for that my presentation and paper itself were rather lackluster.

I've learned so much about film, but feel like I could still stand to learn far more if I were to take the class again.

  16. I felt like my project included good aspects, but I feel as though they were poorly constructed. Perhaps as though a child using paste to make an art project. I really enjoyed writing my paper about sound and silence, but I left a little space between my paper and my film. To me, the paper and film were separate from each other, and if I had tried to connect the two a bit more I would have been more satisfied.
